Our Methods
Patella Arthroscopic
This is surgery in which a small camera is used to look inside the kneecap. Small cuts are made to insert the camera and tiny surgical instruments into the patella to perform the procedure.
DescriptionThree different types of pain relief (anesthesia) may be used for Patella Arthroscopic surgery:
- Local anesthesia. The patella can be numbed with numbing medications. You may also be given medicines that relax you. You will stay awake.
- Spinal Anesthesia. Also called regional anesthesia. It is injected into a space in the spine. You will be awake, but you will not be able to feel anything below the waist.
- General anesthesia. You will be asleep and feel no pain.
- Regional nerve block (adductor or femoral canal block). This is another type of regional anesthesia. The anesthetic is injected around the nerve in the groin. You will be asleep during the operation. This type of anesthesia will block pain, so less general anesthesia is needed.
A cuff-like device may be placed around the thigh to help control bleeding during the procedure.
Our specialist will make 2 or 3 small incisions around the patella. Salt water (saline solution) will be pumped into it to inflate it.
A narrow tube with a small camera on the end will be inserted through one of the incisions. The camera is attached to a video monitor that allows the surgeon to see inside the patella.
Our specialist may place other small surgical instruments into the patella through the other incisions. He will then repair or remove the problem with your kneecap.
At the end of the surgery, the saline solution will be drained from the patella. Our specialist surgeon will close the incisions with sutures (stitches) and cover them with a dressing.
